LED lighting technology helps aquaculture

Which is stronger in aquaculture compared to traditional fluorescent lamps versus LED light sources?

Traditional fluorescent lamps have long been one of the main artificial light sources used in the aquaculture industry, with low purchasing and installation costs. However, they face many disadvantages, such as the problem of short lifespan in humid environments and the inability to adjust the light, which may lead to stress reactions in fish. In addition, the disposal of fluorescent lamps can also cause serious pollution to water sources.

With the rapid development of optoelectronic technology, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have become the fourth generation of emerging light sources, and their applications in aquaculture are becoming increasingly widespread. Aquaculture, as an important industry in China’s agricultural economy, has become an important physical means of artificial light supplementation using LED lights in the process of factory aquaculture. Compared to traditional light sources, using LED light sources for artificial light supplementation can better meet the growth needs of different types of aquatic organisms. By adjusting the color, brightness, and duration of light, it can promote the normal growth and development of aquatic organisms, increase the quality and yield of organisms, reduce production costs, and improve economic benefits.

LED light sources also have the advantages of precise control of the light environment, long service life, and high energy efficiency, making them an environmentally friendly and sustainable new lighting method. At present, in China, the lighting fixtures in aquaculture workshops are mostly extensive. With the development and popularization of science and technology, LED lighting fixtures can significantly improve yield and efficiency in the aquaculture process, promoting high-quality and environmentally friendly development of fish production.

The Current Situation of LED in Aquaculture Industry

Aquaculture is one of the important pillars for the rapid development of China’s agricultural economy, and currently has become the forefront of innovation and development in modern aquaculture. In the standardized and scientific management of aquaculture, the use of LED lighting fixtures for artificial lighting is an extremely important physical means [5], and also an important measure to achieve precise management of aquaculture production. With the tilt of the Chinese government towards the development of agricultural economy, the scientific use of LED lighting fixtures has become one of the ways to achieve green and sustainable development.

Artificial lighting has become an indispensable part of aquaculture due to the differences in production workshops and natural environmental characteristics of enterprises. Both light and dark environments have adverse effects on the reproduction and growth of fish. While achieving production goals, the light environment must also be matched with a series of factors such as temperature, water quality, and feed.

With the development of semiconductor technology and the continuous pursuit of environmental protection and efficient fish production by humans, the use of LED lights as a physical means to improve aquaculture production efficiency has gradually attracted attention and has been widely applied.

Currently, LED has had successful cases in the aquaculture industry. The Research and Application Engineering Technology Center for Fishery and Marine Special LED Luminaires, jointly established by universities and research institutes such as Dalian Ocean University, has collaborated with South American White Shrimp Breeding Enterprises in Zhangzhou, Fujian. Through customized design and installation of intelligent aquaculture lighting systems, it has successfully increased shrimp production by 15-20% and significantly increased profits.
